Yang Yisun (style name Ziyu; sobriquets Yongchun, Haosou) was a… 更多 native of Changshu in Jiangsu. Many famous seal-script calligraphers appeared in the Qing dynasty, including Sun Xingyan, Deng Shiru, and Wu Xizai. Yang Yisun excelled at etymology and was well-versed in different calligraphic types. The substitution of three characters in this couplet derives from the methods of writing in ancient times, demonstrating the careful attitude on the part of the calligrapher. The character forms here are spread out with warm, smooth lines for a lofty and refined effect. This work dates to the "jiaxu" year of the Tongzhi reign (1874), when Yang Yisun was 62 years old by Chinese count. |

Wen Zhengming rarely did paintings of ladies, this one from the… 更多 age of 70 by Chinese reckoning being the only one in the National Palace Museum collection. Here stands a lady holding a fan in the corner of a garden, with clusters of plantain trees and a large standing garden rock behind her. Wen’s signature dated this work to a spring day in the “jihai” year of the Jiajing reign (1539), also mentioning that he had had an opportunity to see a painting on the same subject by Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), and so he did this copy for his pleasure. The brushwork and composition here are terse and to the point. With just a few strokes of the brush, Wen was able to capture the idea, making this work in the literati style also have a sense of revivalism. Despite the pure simplicity of the painting, the contents of the poetry inscribed at the top provide an exquisite portrayal of the scenery and the lady, with both text and image playing off each other in a unique manner. |

除了魁星富含考運亨通的寓意，他的四周亦環繞著各種祥瑞象徵。像是花盆四面都有五隻蝙蝠環繞壽字的圖案，象徵福壽及五福臨門；盆… 更多裡太湖石上的靈芝，則代表芝生祥瑞；就連魁星手裡的梅枝，也具有梅花先春、領先群倫的意味。整件作品運用生動的雕刻和精巧的鑲嵌技巧，將金銀及各式珍貴寶石組合成富含吉祥意義的美麗陳設品，是不是令人嘆為觀止呢？ The Deity Kuei-xing not only represents prospect of success in the civil service examinations but is also surrounded here by various auspicious symbols. The sides of the jade planter, for example, are adorned with images of multi-colored bats surrounding a longevity character, symbolizing prosperity and long life as well as good fortune at one’s doorstep. The fungus on the garden rock in the planter is an auspicious imagery of immortality, while the branch of plum blossoms in the deity’s hand also serves as a harbinger of spring, blooming before all the others. This sculpture features lively carving and skillful inlay techniques combining gold, silver with semi-precious gems and convey auspicious connotations, all that makes this piece of display exquisitely beautiful. |
