明太宗仁孝徐皇后（1362-1407），開國大將徐達（1332-1385）之女，展出此書便是由她採擷儒、釋、道三家之中，足以勸善或懲惡的言行，錄成嘉言後，繼之編輯而來。從院藏每冊首葉右上皆鈐「厚載之記」方形朱印，以及包背裝，加上罕見，且帶有女性特有柔媚風格的桃紅鳳凰穿枝紋紙箋書衣來看，本書不但是明內府刻本，而且應該也是明宮舊藏的書籍之一。
