郎世寧(1688~1766)，意大利人。19歲入天主教耶穌會為修士，27歲來華傳教，召入內廷供奉。善畫人物、花鳥，尤擅畫馬。
本幅畫池中游魚，取材構圖純為中國式樣，但以強調光影與立體寫實的西洋畫法為之，充分地表現了魚尾和背部鰭條的立體感，又以白粉表現魚皮受光發亮的質感。此畫上緣尚有草葉紋圖案，或許原本是加框飾掛在宮殿壁面的畫作，後來才取下裱成掛軸形制。
