The area below the rim of this vessel is decorated with a ring of “eye and thunder” patterning, the three feet featuring beast-mask designs and the handles in the form of twisted cords.
The inner wall of this vessel bears an insignia for the Mao clan with an inscription indicating that it was cast for a mother by the name of Wu as a ritual bronze for use at the ancestral shrine. The inscription of seven characters in two lines is typical of the short writing on Shang and Zhou bronzes.
This is a ritual bronze vessel once used for steaming food, reaching a peak of popularity in the late Shang and early Western Zhou period.
