農曆六月，逼人的溽暑，消耗著人們的體力，因此沒有十分要緊的事，人們都選擇避暑。畫中一片荷塘，垂柳濃陰，畫家用青藍調子的彩色，一層層的塗染，襯托出萬頃清涼。仕女們有的在高樓消暑，有的在池塘採蓮，有的在憑欄垂釣，有的在放艇清遊，使人有一種水上風來，暗香浮動的感受。
