The Shi Chen stele (or "Stele for Temple of Confucius Rites by… 更多 Shi Chen, Minister of Lu") was engraved on both sides. This is a rubbing of the back, hence the title.
Carved in 168 CE, the contents of the stele deal with Shi Chen renovating the Temple of Confucius. A masterful Eastern Han commemorative stele, it is one of the "Three Temple of Confucius Steles" along with those entitled "Ritual Vessels" and "Yiying." The brushwork here is moderate and reserved, the character forms upright and foursquare with a solemn and broad force. The calligrapher pressed hard while turning back the brush in the left and right diagonal strokes as well as in the rise and fall of the strokes to form "goose tail" mannerisms especially seen in Han clerical script. The last line of 36 characters clearly shows this to be a Qing dynasty rubbing.
