十七世紀後半葉，西方鼻煙潮流進入中國，「通嚏輕揚」的鼻煙及裝飾華麗的鼻煙盒作為外交禮品，藉由歐洲傳教士、使節及商賈進入清宮，受到清代皇帝喜愛。
附圖的【金胎畫琺瑯鑲錶音樂鼻煙盒】是以黃金打造盒胎，上彩繪琺瑯掀蓋盒，有上下蓋，下蓋的蓋面琺瑯畫人物，掀蓋後可存放鼻煙，上蓋則嵌有錶盒，內並有音樂盒機芯，這種多功能的鼻煙盒，顯示鼻煙盒製作考究，為各種精緻工藝之擅場。
Many early Qing dynasty records mention European missionaries and envoys presenting snuff and snuff boxes to the Qing court as tribute. These gorgeous snuff boxes are often made of precious metals, such as gold and silver.
