明代對沿海採取較為保守的防禦態度，清初，雖歷經康、雍、乾三帝的圖治，但對於沿海的政策，雖偶有調整，基本上沒有大幅度的改變。一直到西方的船堅礮利叩開了沿海的門戶，清廷不得不重新調整心態，面對飄海過來的世界變局。清代中葉以後的沿海輿圖，大量出現局部或刻意強調若干主題的海防圖，反應了清廷面對時代變局的急迫性。
The coastal maps since the mid-Qing feature in large quantity specific locality details or particular themes. It shows that the dynasty had to respond to the exigencies of the new situations.
