In Madagascar the dead are buried in collective, ‘ancestral tombs’ (fasandrazana). A number of cultural practices allow the circulation of the dead from one tomb to another, for example when the descendants of a particular ancestor decide to build a separate tomb or when some members of the descent group hive off in a context of economic migration.
