很久以前在道路尚未開通之時，一切物資供給仰賴海路進行，由於村落中只有九戶人家，故對外採買時皆要求備妥「九份」，久而久之，人們便以此命名。
因為採礦和掏金興盛繁榮接著因為礦脈枯竭而沒落，然而復古懷舊的老街和漂亮的海景讓九份再次復興成了熱門的觀光景點。
